The Office of Government and Community Affairs has recently entered into sponsorship agreement with local area schools through the national organization, Adopt A Classroom.

Our first two schools are Bennett and White Elementary's in the Detroit Public School systems.  Please check back for updates in regards to our initial sponsorships.

Playground equipment donation to Sunshine Montessori Preschool/Spirit of Hope Church

The Office of Government and Community Affairs, in cooperation with Facilities Planning and Management, Office of Fiscal Operations, helped to facilitate a donation of playground equipment to the Sunshine Montessori Preschool at the Spirit of Hope Church. Sunshine Montessori is located at 1519 Martin Luther King Blvd. in Detroit’s Woodbridge neighborhood.

This playground equipment was located at the Forest Arms Apartments and was going unused during the building’s closure.  The equipment was in nearly new condition and would have otherwise been placed in storage or discarded.

We learned of the school’s needs from a School of Medicine staff member and made contact with the school.  Sunshine Montessori is located in the backdrop of campus, and we feel fortunate to have been able to make this community outreach connection.  After the playground items were installed, staff, including Vice President Harvey Hollins, visited the location to meet with Spirit of Hope’s Pastor, Matthew Bode, and pre-school staff and children.

The donated playground equipment consisted of a WSU green and gold slide and teeter totter. To see pictures of the donation, click here.

Community Advisory Board

The mission of the Community Advisory Board is to provide advice to Wayne State University's president and the Government and Community Affairs office regarding the university’s current strategic plan, mission and other university priorities, as well as assist with their implementation. WSU’s community outreach efforts focus on the neighborhoods surrounding its main and satellite campuses, as well as the metro Detroit area as a whole.

The Community Advisory Board will consist of community leaders, activist citizens from the neighborhood, for-profit and non-profit organizations.

More information about the Community Advisory Board will be available by fall of 2007. In the meantime, please contact the Office of Community Affairs for more information.
