Wayne Cares

Helping to build a successful community is part of Wayne State University's urban mission. Lending helpful hands to uplift those in need is a critical building block. Wayne Cares is a university outreach initiative that brings together the university community for the purpose of charitable giving. Its primary goal is to help university units work together and collaborate with each other for the good of the community.

Coalition on Temporary Shelter (COTS)

To demonstrate the Wayne Cares initiative to the Detroit area, in the fall of 2007, Wayne Cares launched a critical needs drive for the Coalition on Temporary Shelter (COTS). WSU students, faculty, staff, helped collect more than 4,000 items ranging from children's toys and clothing to toiletries, food and blankets.

Combined Charitable Contributions Campaign

The charitable organizations participating in the combined campaign are the Black United Fund and United Way for Southeastern Michigan. The Black United Fund is a community-based resource center that assists community efforts through referrals, funding, consultation and/or technical assistance. United Way provides our community with an independent safety net of health and human services by supporting a number of community service agencies. « 2010 Charitable Campaign »

Detroit's Spring Clean Up - Midtown (formerly Motor City Makeover)

May is "Motor City Makeover" month, a major citywide clean up initiative. The City of Detroit’s Motor City Makeover Midtown VI took place on May 17, 2008. More than 300 Wayne State University Warriors and community members helped clean the areas surrounding campus.

Forgotten Harvest

Community Affairs has entered into an informal partnership with Forgotten Harvest and AVI to contribute food to Forgotten Harvest. Forgotten Harvest 'rescues' food that AVI would normally dispose and distributes it to local homeless shelters and kitchens. AVI will donate all food that has been prepared but not consumed such as boxed lunches and leftover food from campus restaurants like Pizza Hut. Forgotten Harvest will receive donations based on a pick up schedule to reflect a Friday or Saturday every other week and will measure donations based on pounds donated. The office will keep record of donations and compile for reports. To date, we have donated over 1768 pounds of food to local area homeless shelters and kitchens.

iStart - Warrior Service Day

The Office of Government and Community Affairs has collaborated with iStart for New Student Days. iStart is a mandatory three-day program for all incoming freshman students, beginning with Convocation and concluding with Warrior Service Day, when students will connect with their peers and experience teambuilding activities, academic seminars and community service.

Race for the Cure

The Komen Detroit Race for the Cure® is the largest race in Michigan and is one of more than 100 Komen Foundation 5K races in a series that attracts over one million participants annually. Its purpose is to educate and build positive awareness about breast cancer and the importance of good breast health. Race supporters are encouraged to raise funds to bring us closer to “a world without breast cancer.” The event celebrates those who have survived the disease and takes time to remember those who have not. The Race raises significant funds for local screening, treatment, and education programs and for research grants awarded throughout the nation by Susan G. Komen for the Cure. « 2009 Race »

Volunteer Service Day

On Saturday, April 18, 2009, more than 400 volunteers cleaned up and revitalized four large parks in Detroit: Clark Park (southwest), Eliza Howell Park (northwest), Cannon/Balduck Parks (east), and Lipke/Robinwood Parks (northeast). More than 400 tires were salvaged during the clean-up at Eliza Howell Park.

The Wayne Cares initiative actively shows the community the University’s collective commitment to making a difference in the lives of those in need.
